Student Support Services (SSS)

Student Support Services (SSS) provides a broad array of student development, academic enrichment, and parent development services in order to produce positive academic and personal outcomes for students.  Community Counseling and Mediation (CCM) has been providing student support services to public schools in New York City for over twenty years that include individual, group and family counseling, after-school, literacy, college and career preparation, violence/gang prevention, conflict resolution and mediation, mentoring, and leadership development.

Leadership Development and Civic Engagement

CCM’s Leadership Development training takes place after school and involves life skills training and service learning opportunities from students’ particular communities.  Leadership team leaders conduct life skills training for youth on subjects of interest including health, sexuality, social pressure, bias and help them identify and implement service learning based on community improvement projects, using various research methods to identify needs and assets.  These projects serve as dynamic vehicles for youth to develop leadership, employment, creative, academic, and social competencies as well as presentation and research skills.

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling sessions are structured to provide an opportunity for students to share privately issues that may be affecting their attendance, behavior and school work and to develop goals and learn skills and gain awareness and access to services and resources that can help them surmount personal challenges, while developing caring relationships with responsible adults who provide sensitive feedback while holding youth accountable to their goals.

Group Counseling

CCM offers professionally certified mental health counselors and licensed social workers, as well as a growing cadre of experienced peer counselors, to conduct group counseling and facilitate support groups for improved attendance and academic performance, reduced behavioral problems, improved family dynamics, health issues, violence and pregnancy prevention.

College/Post Secondary Planning

We provide intensive supplementary education enhancement and support services for students 14-18, including Study Hall Help, Regents Prep, SAT Prep, Job Search assistance, Career Fairs and Workshops, College Search & Application assistance, and service learning projects.

Career Awareness and the World of Work

These services will focus on preparing youth for work experiences and personal/social development.  Career Awareness services develop workplace competencies, such as resume writing, dealing with supervision, and effective communication skills.  Practical experience is gained through job shadowing and internships placements as practical experience, contact with military recruiters, access to resources and innovative activities unique to youth’s needs.

Conflict Resolution/Peer Mediation

Conflict Resolution and Mediation Training gives youth the skills they need to make positive life decisions in navigating the violence and bullying that often surrounds them in their daily lives and to prevent encounters with the juvenile justice system.

School Day Tutoring/Homework Assistance

Students are scheduled for time with tutors for assistance and support around school assignments either in small groups or on a one-to-one basis, so that students can submit their homework in a complete and timely fashion, while deepening their understanding of the subject matter and increase their skill level.
